For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Romans 8:38-39

Mr. Matt Pannkuk-Chaplain, Bible Teacher
Today was our Theme Chapel, where we will discuss our theme for the year.  The theme is Go! Live the Story!  It is intentionally connected to last year’s theme Go! Tell the Story!
We started off being called to worship using our theme verse, “By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers. Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth” (1  John 3:16,18).
Then we were led by Mr. Wildermuth and Mrs. Ragsdale in singing our theme song, “O Love That Will Not Let Me Go.”  Then I spoke on our theme, the verse, and the song with the students.
I spent some considerable time walking through the song lyrics, since it has some oddly phrased verses and is quite poetic in nature.  They all seemed to enjoy the images used to help illustrate the purpose of the verses.
Some questions you might ask your students today:
-What does it mean to “live a story”? (Answer: to make it a reality with our behavior. Example: reading about a roller coaster vs. actually going on on)
-How does this verse fit the theme? (Answer: John encourages us to not just talk empty words, but back it up with action)
-Have you ever had someone say something to you, but not follow it up with action? (A parent make a promise to do something, but didn’t do it; a friend says they’ll let you borrow what they’re playing with but doesn’t).  How did it make you feel?
-Why is it important to do what we say, and follow up our words with actions? (Answer: it shows we are trustworthy. And as Christians, why would they listen to the Story we tell if we don’t Live it out?)
-Ask them to explain the song lyrics to you! http://ighymns.herokuapp.com/hymns/o-love-that-will-not-let-me-go
-What pictures do you remember seeing on the screen? (They saw pictures on the screen to help show what each stanza was trying to convey)
-What do those images teach you about God? (Answer: His ocean depth of love fills our lives; his blazing light of life brightens our days; his rainbow leads us through storms to the Cross, where he fulfills all his promises; his new life allows us to flourish, like a beautiful flower)
-Ask them what actions the four main subjects in each verse do (Love, Light, Joy, Cross)? (Answer: Love never lets go; Light follows us always; Joy seeks us in pain; the Cross lifts our head).
-What bad thing that you say, do, or think, will cause God to let go of his love for you? (Answer: Nothing! Maybe read the end of Romans 8, that nothing can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus!)
Further discussion:
-How does having such a secure and unbreakable love make you feel?
-Why would you want to share such a love with other people?
-How can you share that love through words and talk?
-How can you share that love through deeds and action?
May the joy of the LORD be our strength.
