The next Twin Oaks volunteer week at Ditto is quickly approaching

By Amanda Compton

Quickly approaching is our next volunteer week at Ditto Family Resale, a family resale shop that partners with Christian schools in the area to help provide affordable Christian education to families who could not otherwise afford it.

At Twin Oaks Christian School, the full annual payout from Ditto goes directly to the Dr. Bob Jurgenson Scholarship Fund, which assists TOCS families with tuition costs. So please prayerfully consider serving a shift or two during the week of November 13-18.

Last year, Twin Oaks Christian School received $25,000 from Ditto, which was a $10,000 increase from 2015 and a $13,000 increase from 2014. This year could very well see significant increase if everyone chips in to fill available shifts. On the flip side, however, Twin Oaks could see a payout reduction — as this year’s compensations depend on the fulfillment of service hours during a respective school’s assigned weeks.

“Everyone gets something, but if we don’t fulfill our volunteer responsibilities, we do not receive the maximum payout,” explained Co-Heads of School Debbie Stair and Sherry Blough. “More scholarships mean we can attract more families to our school.”

Since Twin Oaks Christian School filled all but three shifts during the last Twin Oaks week at Ditto, we have been given the opportunity to make those up during the upcoming volunteer period. If filled, this will keep us on track for maximum payout.

Ditto General Manager Deborah Shields said they chose to assign two weeks a semester per school as a way to create an excitement to work together in school communities. “This also ensures we have a steady flow of volunteers each week throughout the school year to help process and price donations so we can get them out on the sales floor,” said Shields.

She also noted that September saw an 80 percent increase in sales over this same time last year, which will translate into larger payouts to partnering schools.

“The resulting growth helped crown September 2017 as our top-grossing month to date!” said Deborah in an October email to school leaders. “Regular volunteers made all the difference last month, helping us push donations through the sorting process in record time. September’s numbers reflect these efforts.”

In fact, business at Ditto is booming this year. So much so that Shields is asking partnering schools for fall/winter clothes donations for children ages five and up. Also, due to an increase in business and volunteers, shifts have been reduced by 30 minutes, making it a bit easier for busy moms and dads to serve.

Free after care until 4:00 p.m. will be offered to families who serve during the 1:00-3:00 p.m. shift. Family members, friends and students 16 years or older are all welcome to serve.

Keep in mind that a few hours of service helps Ditto not only meet its daily business needs, but also abundantly bless the community it serves.

Twin Oaks Christian School, a ministry of Twin Oaks Presbyterian Church

  • Provide member schools with an additional revenue source to offset rising tuition costs.
  • Assist families who could not otherwise afford a Christian education.
  • Support educational needs within the community.

Through Jesus, we are conduits of His grace and it is that grace the enables us to serve

providing clarity on why we do what we do — both here at the school and our partnership with Ditto :

Ditto has a new policy to involve all seven Christian schools equally.  Each school will be responsible for TWO weeks a semester.  We will need to fill eight spots a day for a week at a time.  Each shift is 2 ½ hours. Our first week will be Oct. 23-28.

*Ditto Update: We Need YOU!
Did you know that Twin Oaks Christian School received $25,000 from Ditto this year?  We received $15,000 in 2016, $12,000 in 2015 and, in 2014, we received $10,000. As you can see every year we have been involved with Ditto we have received a bounty for their success.  Ditto continues to grow every year and so the need for volunteers is greater.  We need you!  We need all TOCS families and extended family!
